“Tax planning and professional accounting are important, but financial advisory services complete the circle. Working with people on a comprehensive level really makes a difference in their lives, and that’s what makes my career satisfying for me.”
Joe joined our affiliated firms in 1991. He enjoys the one-on-one consulting he provides clients, melding their accounting and financial needs and is a frequent speaker about wealth management and tax management strategies for high net worth individuals.
Joe’s past experience includes an accounting position at Good & Fowler, CPA in San Francisco. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In his free time, Joe can be found operating just about any vehicle with an engine, including spec series race cars, dirt bikes and airplanes. Steven E. Leininger, CPA/PFS
“My satisfaction comes from seeing dreams achieved. I really enjoy helping clients plan, bringing clarity to their goals and simplicity to their lives. People live more joyfully if they’re not bogged down in uncertainties. I think it is pretty cool to be part of that for them.”

Steve has past experience as a tax specialist with Coopers and Lybrand in Dallas and has been an accounting instructor at Brigham Young University’s School of Accountancy (which has consistently ranked in the top 3 programs in the country). He is also co-author of numerous articles and publications for the ADA and CDA as well as industry journals tailored to help physicians and dentists grow and manage their wealth.
Steve holds a Master’s in Accountancy from Brigham Young University. In his free time, he enjoys backpacking and jogging. J. Haden Werhan, CPA/PFS
“Serving the dental community has been core to what I do throughout my career. I tell people it’s in my blood. After growing tired of transacting commission-based, real estate sales, I looked for better ways to support practices. I found what I was seeking at Thomas, Wirig & Doll, just as we were setting up Capital Performance Advisors. I’ve never looked back.”
Haden has been a member of our affiliated firms since 1998, providing wealth management, accounting and tax services to successful practitioners.
Haden came to the firm following a lengthy career managing, consulting and providing accounting services to dental practices ranging from start-ups, to acquisitions to large group settings. He has regularly lectured and provided seminars on tax, financial planning, practice management and practice evaluations at the University of California, San Francisco; the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry; and various dental societies.
In addition to his CPA/PFS credentials, Haden also is a licensed real estate broker. He holds a bachelor’s in Economics, University of San Francisco; accounting and taxation studies at Golden Gate University. Haden enjoys living in Lafayette, and pursuing his personal interests in flying, scuba diving and swimming.
Barry W. Oliver, CPA/PFS
“After-tax dollars are the only kind you can spend. That’s why we integrate tax planning and wealth management services. All of us, myself included, wanted to have that kind of major impact helping clients tie all the significant pieces together.”

Brent P. Thomas, CPA/PFS
“We treat the whole client, not just some of the pieces. Monitoring earning potential helps with wise saving and investing, which drives the engine of true financial independence. Ignore a part of the cycle, and it might spin out of control. We put it all together: earning, investing and ultimately spending your wealth.”
A member of our affiliated firms since 1978, Brent gained prior experience in corporate accounting, specializing in auditing. He also has co-authored numerous articles to help medical and dental professionals grow and manage their wealth and businesses. David Harlow, CPA/PFS
“I’m an accountant, but I’m definitely not the stereotypical ‘bean counter’ type. I’m passionate about representing the new kind of
accountant. I’m a people person. Coming here, I get to work closely with small business owners, dentists and physicians daily, in a capacity that has real meaning in their lives. We use the numbers to solve real-life challenges before they become real-life problems.”
